Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts (GAFA) stands as the only higher education institution dedicated to fine arts in South China. Its origins trace back to the Central South Academy of Fine Arts, established in 1953 in Wuhan, Hubei, through the merger of art departments from several renowned colleges, including the Central South College of Arts and the South China People’s College of Arts and Literature. In 1958, the academy relocated to Guangzhou and adopted its current name. With two campuses—Changgang and Guangzhou University Town—GAFA has grown into a key provincial university under Guangdong’s administration.

GAFA plays a pivotal role in shaping art and design education in the region. It serves as the permanent chair unit of the Guangdong Higher Education Art and Design Professional Committee and leads the Guangdong Industrial Design Teaching Guidance Committee.
